Start! Start! Start!

“Rich people acquire assets. Poor people acquire liabilities.” – Robert Kiyosaki.

It’s really that simple. But why are there so many people who still don’t get it? Why are so many people still “buying things that they don’t need to with money that they don’t have to impress people who they don’t like”? It’s astonishing to learn that 78 percent of Americans are living from paycheck to paycheck. This means that they are one retrenchment away from financial destruction, if they aren’t already destroyed yet.

I have been very curious about money since young. I remember when I was around 7 years old, I would cut out the watches and appliances in newspaper advertisement and place them outside my house, pretending to be a businessman. I would stick arrows 100 metres away, pointing towards my house, to tell people that I’m having a sale. One day, my mum came home and followed those arrows and she was shocked at what I did. She tore off those arrows and lectured me that I shouldn’t do that.

Sadly, those seemingly innocuous words, “you shouldn’t do that”, got etched in my soul from then onward. Most of us grow up learning that we should always stay in the path. Be safe. Avoid saying the wrong things. Unfortunately, that’s also why people don’t find massive success in their adulthood. That’s why people don’t dare to dream big and don’t fulfill their fullest potential. And that’s why people don’t live a life of meaning and purpose.

How most people live? Find a decent job with a decent pay. Buy a house on a 20 year mortgage loan. Get married and have 2 or 3 kids. And pray that they don’t get fired when the next retrenchment exercise comes around. Wow, how stressful such a life is, isn’t it?

In Robert Kiyosaki’s famous book, Cashflow Quadrant, he stated that wealth is found in the B and I quadrants. B stands for Business and I stands for Investment. The other 2 quadrants and E (employment) and S (Self-employed). If we really want to acquire true wealth, we need to operate in the B and I quadrants. The problem is that most of us go through an education system in our youth preparing us with the skills to function only in the E quadrant. To be operating in the B and I quadrants, we will need to change our mindsets. We will need to acquire the right skills and knowledge to ensure that we become successful in our businesses and investments.

If you are want to move to the B and I quadrants, then you will need to start moving. Opportunities don’t wait. They passes us by with time.

If you want to have a success story that people wants to listen to in years to come, then you will need to start somewhere. If not, the only things you will have to share will be your regrets. Which I can assure you, nobody would really be interested in.
